This print is reproduced from an original egg tempera painting, using natural pigments on gesso board with 23.5ct gold and white gold leaf. ‘The Sacred Garden' is painted in an 'icon' style. 'An icon can be viewed as a door' or a 'window into eternity', an image to stir a contemplative experience. . Inspired by English medieval stained glass and herbal manuscripts it is rooted in Celtic nature spirituality, early Christian mysticism and an intimate understanding of the natural world. 'The Sacred Garden' is an interpretation of Earthly Paradise, the Garden of Eden and the Hortus Conclusus. It draws on extensive research into the sacred symbolism of gardens and plants across diverse cultures and beliefs seeking to draw out the unifying archetypes common to many. Dominated by the Tree of Life, whose branches stretch up into the gilded cosmos, the garden is arranged around a flowing, white gold, River of Life. The painting is rich in many-layered symbolism and can be read on different levels. I hope that through my work I can awaken a desire to re-ensoul Nature and encourage people to look with reverence and joyfulness at the astonishing original Divine Creation.
