About the Artist

Shirley Hughes is one of the best-loved and most innovative creators of books for young children.   She has written and illustrated over 80 books and sold more than eleven million copies, won major awards and created some of the most enduring characters of children’s literature.  Shirley Hughes has received the Eleanor Farjeon Award for distinguished services to children’s literature, was awarded an OBE in 1999 and has received the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal, twice.

“In capturing the essence of early childhood…. no other writer/illustrator comes near Shirley Hughes.”   The Sunday Telegraph

“She is an artist who represents ordinary life in a way that makes adults and children alike, fall in love with it.”  The Times

In 2007, her 1977 winner, Dogger, was named the public's favourite winning work of the award's first fifty years. Shirley Hughes won the inaugural Booktrust lifetime achievement award in 2015. Shirley Hughes was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to literature.

“I would like to think I draw with sentiment not with sentimentality.  Family life is high drama, not a sweet idyll.”   Shirley Hughes
